Your Life IS a Story
Weaving the Fabric of Life

03-01-10

One year ago I held the first proof copy of The Holy Order of Womb Women in my hand. This past year has been filled with wonder and surprise as you, my readers, have responded to the story and, in turn, shared your stories with me. I have been invited to give book talks to many groups, and I must confess, I grow weary talking about me. It is time to talk about you. What story is your life telling? How does your story weave into THE story?

In this half-day hands-on workshop we will explore THE story, defining it through color as we create the warp threads for our weaving. Each of us will then choose the colors and textures of our own journey and weave our stories into THE story, creating an amazing Fabric of Life Prayer Cloth.

Women of Scripture are Real People, Too

The Holy Order of Womb Women is my hard-found response to a call to holy orders. Many other women have responded to this call in other ways. No matter the way, we are women and we are called to give birth. Some of us have biological children, some of us adopt, assume, foster, or befriend children, and some of us give birth to our created “children”-our artwork. From Eve to Mother Mary to me and to you, womb women have suffered and rejoiced in the mothering process.

But, you say, the women of scripture were special. They were the mothers of our faith. They couldn’t possibly have struggled through the choices I have had to make … could they?

Well … I’m here to tell you this: they were no different from you or me. Women of Scripture are real people, too. Let’s explore their stories together. Let’s look at the brief glimpse scripture gives us of their lives and, like Paul Harvey, discover “the rest of the story!”

In this one hour talk we will journey together into the stories of Sarah and Hagar whose lives intertwined as they moved from mistress and servant to friends to rivals to …? Dust off your imagination, call on your own life experience, and jump into the story of Abraham’s women, two charter members in the Holy Order of Womb Women.

Walking in Mary’s Shoes
A journey in journaling

Mother Mary is the Mother Superior (or the superior mother) of the Holy Order of Womb Women. She was pregnant out of wedlock, homeless when she gave birth, went into hiding out of fear for her baby’s life, lost her husband, and raised her son alone. When her son was grown he left her alone, denied her, defied the authorities, was arrested, tried and imprisoned. He was crucified while she stood by, helpless, and watched. And, she did it all with grace, and hope, and love.

Shall we take a day to walk in her shoes?

This one day retreat will be a day of pondering. Through prayer, quiet walks, creative writing and art we will look at the stories of Mary’s life and explore how our lives are a reflection of hers.

Join Susan as her life is woven into the lives of Eve, Sarah, Hagar, Rebekeh, Leah, Rachel, Miriam, Martha and the four Mary’s. Along the way you may do some weaving of your own.
